Then and now: Border | Filmfare.com

Bringing a strong anti-war sentiment through film, Border was released in 1997 and recounted the events of the Battle of Longewala in 1971. Helmed by J.P. Dutta, the film is not only memorable for its romantic ballads and war songs, but also for the many portrayals of soldiers and family members who faced many trials and sorrows owing to the war. Armed with some of the biggest stars of the time, we wonder where the cast of the film is today, almost 18 years since its release…

1

Sunny Deol

After playing Brigadier Chandpuri Sunny Deol’s stardom continued to grow, especially with films like Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. But there was a major lull in his career soon after, including the shelved project I Love New Year. Shooting currently for Ghayal Once Again, let’s see if he can bring back the glory days with the sequel to his 1990 film.

2

Suneil Shetty

Epitomizing the nationalistic fervour with his patriotic dialogues in Border, 90s star Suniel Shetty not only played a patriot to the hilt but also brought the house down with  his comic timing in films like Hera Pheri. Interestingly enough, while he romanced a 22-year old Sharbani Mukherjee in 1997, his own 22 year old daughter Athiya is set to make her debut this year!

3

Jackie Shroff

From being the charming Air Force officer in Border to being the bad guy Charan Grover in Happy New Year, Jackie Shroff’s signature baritone and commanding stature have always stood out. With more downs than ups over the last 18 years, he’s bringing his fatherly side on screen for Brothers and we can’t wait to see if he’s as fighting fit as his newcomer son, Tiger.

4

Akshaye Khanna

After playing the firebrand Dharamvir, Akshaye Khanna rose to fame with the romantic saga Taal and the coming of age drama Dil Chahta Hai. But the rising star of 1997 went missing from the big screen in 2012 and is almost forgotten now.

5

Sudesh Berry

When we think about patriotic characters in films, Sudesh Berry instantly comes to mind, whether as Mathura Das in Border or Yadav in LOC Kargil. Though he’s now more of a television presence with shows like Mahabharat under his belt.

6

Kulbhushan Kharbanda

Right from being Bhagiram the cook in Border, to being the ruler of Amer in Jodhaa Akbar, we can surely count on Kulbhshan Kharbanda as a source for pearls of wisdom in all of his films. He was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider.

7

Puneet Issar

As the country proud Subedar in Border, Puneet Issar’s character was highly memorable. But today his booming voice is best remembered from his tirades around the Bigg Boss house.

8

Tabu

She’s gone from playing a patriotic wife to Sunny Deol’s character in the film to charting international waters with her acting talent. Winning acclaim and awards nationally for her stellar performances in films, she has even made a mark overseas in her impactful performances in Mira Nair’s Namesake. We can’t wait to see what she does next!

9

Sharbani Mukherjee

She made a striking debut as Phoolkanwar or Suneil Shetty’s wife in the film but her career in Bollywood never really bloomed. She did, although make her presence felt in the south, acting in Malayalam and Tamil films.

10

Raakhee Gulzar

One of Bollywood’s most iconic mother figures, Raakhee Gulzar brought the same charm to her role in Border. Raakhee brought the character to life then but she chose to quit films soon after in 2003.

y

Pooja Bhatt

Pooja Bhatt played the feisty village belle Kammo in Border. But as a director since 2003, she’s brought out her bold side with films like Paap and Jism 2 and is currently working on her next film, Cabaret.

12

Sapna Bedi

In a small part as Jackie Shroff’s love interest, Sapna Bedi is best remembered for the audacious fly by scene that makes her drop to her knees. But we haven’t seen her light up the big screen since.
