J.I.D is an Atlanta rapper/songwriter currently signed to J. Cole‘s Dreamville Records. His discography includes the album, The Never Story (2017), and the EP, DiCaprio (2015). He was named to the 2018 XXL Freshman Class. J.I.D was born Destin Route on October 31, 1990, in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents are Kathy and Carl Route. He has 6 older siblings. The moniker “J.I.D” is attributed to his grandmother calling him jittery as a child. J.I.D attended Stephenson High School where he played football and ran track. He led Stephenson to a regional football championship in 2007 and 2008. His high school accolades include All-Region first-team defensive back and All-State honorable mention. J.I.D earned a football scholarship to Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. His major was entrepreneurship with a minor in sports management. He was kicked out his senior year.
CAREER
Post University, J.I.D reconnected with the hip-hop duo EarthGang (Johnny Venus, Doctur Dot). He was featured on the duo’s single “Kick’n It” from the album The Better Party (2010). They later collaborated on the 2012 song “Purple Paradise” featuring Stillz. J.I.D debut mixtape, Route of All Evil, dropped in June 2012. It was made available via digital download. His second mixtape, Para Tu, arrived in October 2013. The tape was re-released in December 2017. J.I.D collaborated with Spillage Village on the albums Bears Like This (2014), Bears Like This Too (2015), and Bears Like This Too Much (2016). The latter featured production from J. Cole, Mac Miller and Childish Major among others. J.I.D was featured on the ‘These Days Tour’ (2014) with Ab-Soul and the ‘Elephant Eyes Tour’ (2015) with Omen. He was also featured on the ‘Too High To Riot Tour’ (2016) with Bas.
J.I.D kicked off 2015 with his debut EP, DiCaprio. It featured guest appearances from EarthGang, OG Maco, Key! and Jace. The 6-tracked EP featured songs like “LeTrow” and “LeHooligangs”. J.I.D signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records in February 2017. His debut studio album, The Never Story, followed in March 2017. It was released by Dreamville, Spillage Village, and Interscope Records. The album peaked at #14 on the Heatseeker Albums chart and #197 on the Billboard 200. It was supported by the single “Never” produced by Christo and Childish Major. The official video for Never has been viewed 4+ million times on YouTube.
In 2017, J.I.D served as an opening act on J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only Tour. Next, he co-headlined the ‘Never Had Shit Tour’ alongside EarthGang. J.I.D’s first track of 2018 “My Name Is” was released on January 25. It now has 190K+ spins on SoundCloud. J.I.D was 1 of 9 featured on the cover XXL’s 2018 Freshman Class.
