Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. sits empty at its longtime Front Street location on Wednesday. After decades of serving shrimp on the seashore in historic Lahaina Town, Bubba Gump’s permanently closed its doors on April 4, Easter Sunday, according to the restaurant’s general manager. Inspired by the 1994 movie “Forrest Gump,” the company opened its first restaurant in California and quickly expanded to 22 locations across the U.S., including on Front Street in 1997, according to its website. The company’s corporate office could not be reached for comment following the closure. “We are grateful for the support of our community and encourage our guests to visit us at our other Landry’s location nearby!” a sign on the restaurant said.
Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is also a supporter of the Run Forrest Run Front Street Mile and 5K/10K event, which starts and ends by Forrest Gump’s bench and stone shoes.
